Tearing my left tricep was a depressing moment. I am a goal orient donkey. I need a carrot dangling in front of my face to keep me moving. I decided to work on the 1 arm pull up - the Holy Grail of body weight exercises. On my first attempts, I couldn't get any movement. I had no feel for the movement.
A search on Youtube lead me to Alex Puccio - rock climber. What I noticed was Alex lifts her off hand above her head as she begins the movement, which engages her whole body. She also crunches her lower body, raising her legs. This got me thinking about the way we coach paddling. We tend to focus on the obvious, the main muscles used to pull. But what about the rest of the body? What are we doing with our legs, abs, neck, opposite side of the body? etc.
If all we do is what we already know, how do we improve? So, I'm looking outside of paddling for answers.
