Not every day in Hawaii brings waves. On days when the current was slack and the ocean flat, we would spearfish. Often over the same reefs we surfed when a swell was present.
Spearfishing without a wetsuit is a calorie hungry beast akin to arctic exploration. Chilled and hungry, our hunt was usually followed by a communal BBQ. We would always invite our friends and family to share in the fruits of our labors.
I sometimes think these generous invitations to our non-diving friends were actually a selfish excuse to stay in the water longer and shoot more fish. Our ethos was nothing goes in the freezer. Take only what we could consume in a day, as tomorrow we would be in the water again. --- Dave Chun
