This winter, Amtrak announced it was reopening Denver’s beloved ski train to Winter Park. Now skiers can take the rails to the mountains.

But that’s not the only way to take public transportation to get outside.

In the 1940s, the Winter Park ski train whisked skiers from Denver up to the mountains. It was a party, especially in the après car. It fizzled over the years, but now it’s back.

You can smash bumps at Mary Jane, then not worry about staying awake (or sober) on the ride back. Tickets are $39 each way, and the train leaves Union Station at 7 a.m. on Saturday and Sundays only, returning from Winter Park at 4:30 p.m., through Mar. 26, 2017.

Even the biggest of cities has options for outdoor adventures. New York’s go-everywhere subway system might be its best feature, and from Midtown Manhattan you can take your board and the A Train to the Rockaways.
