Humans have participated in balneotherapy or the application of mineral baths, hot springs, even geothermal mud—for healing for centuries. The benefits go beyond physical and there is something to be said for the healing powers of water.
The benefits don’t stop at the physical. By surrounding ourselves by or entering into water, we are able to connect to our deepest selves, to each other and possibly to a deeper etheral place. Many religions and cultures incorporate water into rituals, bathing, a source of food and much more. We can certainly be lead to understand how these findings for cancer patients are true.
I Witnessed the Healing Powers of the Ocean in Cancer Patients
THURSDAY MAY 4, 2017
Lacking much real evidence, I decided to go on my gut. I felt there was plenty in Jack’s story to support an experiment of my own. And so began the documentary film and Kickstarter campaign,Between Two Harbors. As a filmmaker, I decided to follow those in WAO’s inaugural ocean healing program, held at White’s Landing on Catalina Island for cancer patients and survivors diagnosed with stage 1 to stage 4 cancer. I would take a year to follow the campers, witness their interactions with the ocean, and see how their health might benefit from some time in salt water. I was convinced I would witness magic.
