Paddling downwind is an exhilarating experience.  Flat water practice guarantees success for your first downwinder.  Be prepared and have fun!

SUP Tip: Catching waves and bumps on a Stand Up Paddleboard: Flatwater drills. If you want to get ready for a SUP downwinder, here are some drills to get ready in calmer waters before you go out in the open ocean waters:

1) Do three to five quick acceleration stokes. For more tips on how to do these quick acceleration strokes, please also watch this video:

2) Glide and skim the paddle as shown in the video

3) once you are comfortable with going from quick acceleration strokes to gliding and skimming, you can work on moving your feet back and into a staggered/ surf stance while bringing your hips forward.
