When Was the Last Time You Did Something for the First Time?

" When was the last time you did something for the first time ? "

People that thrive on being in water are naturally drawn to the perpetual change that it provides. It's clear that we all feel it and have a sensitivity to the impact it has on our lives. The more time you spend on the water the more you can't imagine not being near it and a higher calling to take care of it.

Every year I always block time to do things I've never done. It has included every thing from learning to play the Ukulele, doing a lecture series for a local high school, cage diving with great white sharks in South Africa, and doing my first relay in endurance sports with 2 friends in the 14ft. SUP division for Molokai2Oahu.

In 2015 I found out there was an outrigger canoe club in Monterey, CA http://www.kekaiouhane.org I had never done any ocean based endurance sport racing with a group dynamic. This was a challenge , but it goes back to the title. I very much appreciate the collective of the group setting up the canoes, moving them to the water, working as a team, and seeing Aloha in the truest form. View Video.

Many of us are drawn to pure adventure. When I got connected to Stand Up Paddle in 2008 it opened a huge new arena of exploring the water that makes up the area I live Carmel by the sea, CA.

The Monterey Peninsula in central California is surrounded by the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. I had done many water activities leading up to 2008 in these waters like open water swimming, surfing, prone paddle board and a few sessions on sea kayaks, but nothing that had opened it up like stand up paddle.

I proposed to a friend we should paddle around the Monterey peninsula several years back (16 miles) I had never met anyone locally that had ever done this on stand up paddle, so we did. It was epic beautiful from fisherman's wharf in Monterey, CA to Monastery beach just south of Carmel.

So in 2015 I guided one of the kids from the outrigger club Harry Diesroth (15 years old) and we paddled the Peninsula last August . We had non stop interaction with lots of humpback whales, sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals etc.. View Video

We then took this small window in August of 2015 to paddle for the first time south from Carmel down a section of the Big Sur coast . So we paddled 14ft boards from Monastery Beach down to the Little Sur River (19 miles) and it was a true adventure. You really need to have a great deal of experience in the water on all the above paddles. There are small windows when this is doable at all (with any measure of safety). View Video
